Avoid Split Hairs : Tips

Do's and Dont's To Avoid Split Ends

  • Tie your hair back if you're boating, riding a motorbike, driving a convertible and so on. This will minimize tangles - the major cause of split ends.

  • Shampoo your hair after every workout or strenuous exercise, as due to perspiration the salt will erode your hair.

  • For dry hair try these tips. Do not dry your hair all the way, it tends to dry it out more. Use coconut, avocado, or jojoba oil overnight as a deep conditioning treatment.

  • For curly hair you have to be very gentle. Let your hair air dry if you live in a warmer arid climate. Use a blow dryer on medium to low with a diffuser if you live a cooler more humid climate. Comb out tangles in the shower while you still have conditioner in your hair.

  • Comb the hair gently. Start at the bottom and work your way up. When you encounter a tangle, don't rip the comb/brush through it, stop and untangle with your fingers and then proceed. You have to be extremely gentle while untangling wet hair. Curly hair types may require combing the hair when it is still wet

  • Take extra care when detangling your hair. Use a wide-toothed comb and gently detangle from the ends, up to the roots. Never over brush. 100 brushstrokes is not necessary, and may lead to more splits than anything else.

  • Minimize or avoid using hair dyes, sprays and gels.

  • Use a weekly deep conditioner. This will keep your hair in optimum condition and will reduce the number of split ends you get.

  • Avoid elastic hair bands. Remove bands, rollers and clips cautiously.

  • Prevent harmful effects of extreme weather conditions on hair, by wearing caps or scarves.

  • To get rid of split ends, take a small section of your hair and carefully twist it gently in a downward motion. When you do this, the split ends will automatically stick out.

  • Get your hair trimmed regularly, meaning every six to eight weeks. All hair gets damaged after a while. Get a trim of at least 1/4 to 1 inches, and you should have solved the problem. It will remove split ends and keep your hair healthy and growing strong.

  • Try to steer clear of chemicals. Natural hair is beautiful. If you absolutely must color your hair, search for the gentlest coloring agent you can find. If you are going to be using chemicals on your hair, be sure to condition your hair more often.

  • Cut the split hairs as soon as you spot them preferably 3 cms away from the split end.

  • Use salon-quality shampoo and conditioner. Generally, when it comes to hair products, you get what you pay for. Investing in quality products will keep you away from the hairdresser for longer.

  • Dry hair gently. Vigorously rubbing your hair dry with a towel is not a good idea. Dripping wet hair should be gently squeezed with a towel to get rid of the excess water. Once the excess water is removed, it is best to let your hair air dry naturally.

  • Avoid products that claim to "heal" split ends. They will only temporarily glue split ends together. They may help prevent messy hair, but they will cause more damage farther down the road.

  • Eat a balanced diet. Getting all the vitamins and sufficient protein will ensure that your body produces the healthiest hair possible. Vitamins sold at drugstores can also help increase growth.
