Astronomy : Introduction Astronomy is the oldest science, but in many respects it is also the newest science because year after year discoveries and new insights continually remake and revise our perspective of the universe. The astronomy major is under the umbrella of the Department of Physics and Astronomy. In the Renaissance the clean, mathematically predictable motions of the planets played a decisive role in the birth of physics. Astronomy deals with the study of the celestial bodies and their compositions, motions, and origins. It is different from most sciences in that we can't directly interact with the object of study.
