The academic programme varies with the institution. The average syllabus includes theory - anatomy, physiology, diets, salesmanship, and salon organization - and practical work - giving facials, different types of massages, make-up, electrical treatment etc.

A great deal of hands-on experience is needed to gain proficiency. Skills may be acquired either through apprenticeship at a good salon or by enrolling for a course at a reputed beauty school. There are a number of good training schools. Some of these schools are affiliated to well known cosmetic manufacturing companies or teaching institutions in India and abroad. Others have built their own reputations and established branches around the county.
