Eligibility For Career in Optometry

The students who has clear 10+2 or equivalent examination, with a minimum of 50% marks in physics, chemistry and biology are eligible for Optometry. In order to practice as an Optometrist, the candidate has to take Bachelor's degree in Optometry. For obtaining Bachelor's degree in Optometry or B.Optom the candidate requires minimum 50% marks in Physics, Chemistry and Biology or Mathematics and English in Higher Secondary Examination (10+2 course) or it's equivalent. The age limit for taking up bachelor's degree is 17 years as on 31st December. The candidate fulfilling given requirements have to appear for the EYECET examination which is the centralized, combined, entrance test for entry into optometry courses and is universally recognized all over the country.

The duration of this course is 4 years. The first 3 years teaching is followed by one year of internship for clinical and trade experience. Courses in pharmacology, optics, vision science, biochemistry, and systemic disease are included in the curriculum. The students also goes for practical training in Basic Science, Dispensing Optics and Clinical subjects. The forth and final year is internship where the students are posted at various hospitals for practical training.
