Psychiatry : Working Conditions

Psychiatrists usually work solo at their clinics. They also practice in the public sector, such as Veterans Administration and state hospitals and community mental health centers that are unique to psychiatry. Other settings for psychiatric practice include medical schools, HMOs, and general hospitals, as well as specialized psychiatric hospitals.

Psychiatrists may work irregular hours and be on-call. They may also work evenings and weekends. Most psychiatrists spend over 60% of their time with patients. They may travel between different workplaces to visit clients or their families. They may also travel overseas to conferences or may spend part of their career working overseas to gain further experience. The work may be stressful at times.
