Travel & Tourism : Career Overview
In industrial sector, travel and tourism has
earned a major portion of foreign exchange. It has given employment to
millions of people worldwide. It includes Government tourism departments,
Immigration and customs services, travel agencies, airlines, tour operators,
hotels , airline catering or laundry services, Guides, Interpreters, Tourism
promotion and sales etc. The wide scope in travel and tourism enterprise
ranges from major internationals with a workforce of thousands to the small
private travel agent employing few employees.
The work of travel and tourism basically includes services for people on
business tours or holiday for this they had to make an assessment of the needs
of tourists and businessmen to help them to avail for the best travel
arrangements from the many available options. Travel can be classified into
leisure travel which involves package tours, pilgrim travel, adventure travel
etc or purely business.
Travel company personnel should be aware of current rules and regulations.
They require extensive knowledge of documents that are required in areas like
cargo, ticketing and passports, visas etc. They also have to keep track of
places to visit, road or air connectivity and other facilities available.
Travel and Tourism has not made a great advancement in India in terms of
career option. However there is a massive improvement and expansion in this
field owing to government's aid. The growing importance of travel and tourism
and wide adventure in this field instigates number of people to choose it as a
career option.
Travel and tourism offer graduation, Post graduation, diploma and other
certification courses. Post-graduate courses includes Master of Tourism
Administration (MTA) which is a two year course. It is approved by the
Ministry of Tourism, Govt. of India. Some universities like The Indian
Institution of Tourism and Travel Management offers this courses.
Certification courses is provided by International Air transport Association (IATA).
Traveling agencies also offers various short-term training programmes.
