Indian Institutes of Technology Delhi is located in Hauz Khas, South Delhi. It is one of the seven Institutes of Technology created as centres of excellence for higher training, research and development in science, engineering and technology in India, the others being at Kanpur, Kharagpur, Madras, Bombay, Guwahati and Roorkee.The institute was established as College of Engineering & Technology, Delhi on August 21, 1961. Its foundation stone was laid by HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, and was inaugurated by Prof sudama, then Union Minister for Scientific Research and Cultural Affairs. IIT Delhi has 13 departments. A department usually focuses on a single engineering or science discipline. Each department has its own administration structure with the Head of the Department (HoD) at the top of it. Each department offers a program (at the undergraduate or post-graduate level), some departments such as Mechanical Engineering Department, offer two or more undergraduate level programs and some departments collaborate with each other to offer a joint program.


There are 11 hostels (9 for boys and 2 for girls). A boy's Hostel in IIT DelhiEach hostel has a capacity of around 400 students though some hostels can house 600 students. All the hostels (Known as Houses) are named after various mountain ranges in India --Shivalik, Aravali, Himadri, Jwalamukhi, Karakoram, Kailash, Kumaon, Nilgiri, Satpura, Vindhyachal and Zanskar. The residential apartments are named after ancient Indian universities --Taxila and Nalanda. Each hostel has its own mess, a common room where residents can watch television and read magazine and newspapers and a visiting room where residents can receive their guests. In addition, each hostel has its own computer room facility. The SAC consists of a gymnasium, swimming pool, a pool room, three squash courts, two table tennis rooms, a music room, a fine arts room and a meeting room which is commonly used to organize quizzing and debating events. The SAC also consists of an Open Air Theater in which concerts of various kinds are hosted. Students can also use the radio broadcast facility in the SAC although its use has declined over the years.

Extra curricular Activities

Various cultural events are organised by the college like Eastern Night, Western night, Fusion Night, Music Manoranjan, Duo Dance, Group Dance, Stage Play, Street Play, quizzing events, Parliamentary Debate, word Games and Just a Minute(JAM), Oil Painting, Mask Making, Charcoal Painting, clay Modelling Competition, Movie Making Competition, Screening of Popular and social awareness movies, Photography Competition, Skating Competition, Website building Competition, SuDoku Competition. The sports include Cricket, Tennis, Squash, Table Tennis, Hockey, Basketball, Badminton, Swimming, Athletics and Weightlifting.
