The Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur is an autonomous engineering and technology-oriented institute of higher education established by the Government of India in 1951. Kharagpur is located about 120 kilometers from Calcutta in Eastern India. It is a quiet, isolated setting (unlike five of the other IITs which are set in cities). IIT Kharagpur also has the largest campus among all IITs (1800 acres) and offers a beautiful setting for undergraduate and postgraduate school life. This unofficial web site is maintained by The IIT Foundation IIT Kharagpur has ranked among the top engineering college in the academic ranking of Indian colleges by various engineering education surveys like India Today, Outlook, etc. The IITs were created with a vision for excellence in Science and Engineering. The IITs are located at Kharagpur, Chennai (Madras), Mumbai (Bombay), Delhi, Kanpur, Guwahati, and Kharagpur. Of them, IIT Kharagpur offers the maximum number of engineering disciplines to choose from. With time, pioneering attempts were made to start advance training in Building Science, Application of Computer Techniques in Architectural design Simulation, Presentation Graphics and Construction Technology. The consultancy activities of the department range from government and large corporate clients in the country ranging from design of large townships, institutions, landscaped environmental planning to conservation of heritage sites and buildings. Some of the key areas of research include Building Technology and Management, Housing and Community Planning, Heritage Studies and Conservation, Urban Design, Visual and Graphic Design, Computer Applications in Architecture and Planning, GIS and Multimedia Applications, Environmental Design, Transportation Planning and Traffic Engineering, Metropolitan Planning, Infrastructure Planning and Systems Management.

Hostel Facilities

The 18 student hostels are located on either side of Scholars Avenue, which extends from the institute gate to the B. C. Roy Technology Hospital. The three earliest halls—Patel, Azad, and Nehru—together constitute the PAN loop or Old Campus, which is located just next to Scholar's Avenue. There are seven hostels for undergraduate male students and one for undergraduate female students. Another hostel for women has quite recently been constructed.

Training And Placement

The Training and Placement Section handles campus placement of the graduating students of all Departments, Centres and Schools. Arrangements for Pre-Placement Talks, Written Tests, Interviews, Group Discussions etc. are made as per the requirements of the Organizations. The section also arranges for summer practical training for all prefinal year B.Tech. (Hons.) students and third year students of 5 Year dual degree M.Tech courses.
