PRESIDENCY COLLEGE, KOLKATA
Presidency College in Kolkata was established on 20th January, 1817. Initially called Hindu College, it is the oldest college in India. It continues to be one of the leading Indian institutions for undergraduate and post-graduate studies. It has been consistently rated as one of the top ten Indian colleges. It was ranked the number one liberal arts college in India by the weekly newsmagazine India Today in 2002. It offers undergraduate and postgraduate degree and Ph.D. courses in natural sciences, humanities and the social sciences. Initially, the classes used to take place in a house taken on rent whose landlord was Gorachand Bysack. Later in 1818 this well-known College shifted to the house of Kamal Bose. This building has a great historic background. Raja Ram Mohan Ray officially inaugurated his Brahma Sabha in the Presidency College, Calcutta. Thereafter the college campus was shifted to Bowbazar. Now, the college campus of Presidency is located at 86/1, College Street. This college campus covers around 14.5 acres of land. Presidency College in Kolkata houses a Boys’ Hostel called Eden Hindu Hostel and a Girls’ Hostel. Presidency College is expanding its courses of study with each passing day. Currently, Mamata Ray is the Principal of Presidency College. Atul Chandra Gupta is the President, whereas, Jatish Chandra Sengupta is the Principal as well as the Secretary of this college.
The candidate must have passed WBHSE / ISC / CBSE (10+2) or any other such equivalent examination that is conducted by other Councils/Boards/Universities, to be recognized by the University of Calcutta.
Requirements for applying to B. Sc.:
Physics Hons: Aggregate 70% + 75% in Physics and Math combined
Economics Hons: Aggregate 65% + 60% in Math or 70% in Business Math
Statistics Hons: Aggregate 55% + 70% in Math and Statistics / Aggregate 60% + 60% in Math & Statistics
Physiology Hons: Aggregate 60% with chemistry, physics and bio-science
Chemistry Hons: Aggregate 70% with physics and math + 70% in Chemistry
Geology Hons: Aggregate 60% with Chemistry, Physics and pass marks in Maths.
Requirements for applying to B. A.:
History Hons: Aggregate 50%
English Hons: (WB Board) Aggregate 65% + 50% in English First language. (Other Boards) Aggregate 65% + English 60%
Applications forms for undergraduate Courses are available from the day after the WBHS results are declared. It can be downloaded from website of the college. It can also be collected on payment of Rs. 15 from the principal’s office. Completed application forms must be submitted to the respective departments of the college. One candidate can not apply for more than two subjects.
Last date for submission of duly filled up form is June 12, 2008.
A preliminary screening is conducted based on previous academic records, followed by an admission test applicable to all Honours subjects. The college gives equal importance to the candidate’s performance in the admission test and also in the last appeared public exam.
