The inspiration for Sainik Schools came from the Rashtriya Indian Military College (RIMC) which have given India many service chiefs and the public school system of England. Sainik schools can be regarded as the ordinary citizen's public school where deserving students can get high quality education irrespective of their income or class background. There is one Sainik School in each of the states of the Republic of India. The objective of the schools is to prepare the students to lead as officers in the Defence Services of the country. However, alumni of Sainik Schools have excelled themselves in diverse walks of life. Sainik schools can be regarded as the ordinary citizen's public school where deserving students can get high quality education irrespective of their income or class background. Seats are reserved for children of serving Defence personnel and concessions are given to children of Government officials. The objective of the schools is to prepare the students to lead as officers in the Defence Services of the country. The schools selects bright and promising students through a national entrance examination.

Sainik Schools include an athletic track, cross-country track, indoor games,Parade ground , boxing ring, firing range, canoeing club, horse riding club, mountaineering club, trekking & hiking club, obstacles course, Football field , Cricket field and Basketball courts. Participation in physical activities is compulsory. The school has 24 play fields, one tennis court, and 4 basketball courts. Organized physical activities especially team games are regarded by the school as of great educational value. The boys have facility to learn swimming, boxing, athletics and gymnastics.
Admission to Classes VI and IX for the academic year 2009-2010 takes place on the basis of the performance of the candidate in All India entrance examination. The entrance test will held on January 4. Boys aged between 10 and 11 years as on July 1, 2009, are eligible for admission to Class VI and between 13 and 14 years for Class IX. The application form can be sent through demand draft drawn on State Bank of India, Amaravathinagar (branch code 2191), in favour of ‘The Principal, Sainik School, Amaravathinagar,’ along with a self-addressed envelope with a clear indication of the standard to which admission is sought and the category. General candidates are to pay caution money of Rs. 1000/- at the time of admission. SC/ST boys are to pay only Rs. 500/-. The deposit is refundable after deducting dues if any.
