St. Xavier's College, Mumbai is named after a Jesuit saint, St. Francis Xavier. It is located in Mahapalika Marg Fort. The Society of Jesus has founded this institution on 30th January 1869. Ever since its inception the emphasis has been on critical and creative thinking in order to bring up well-educated individuals. The college seeks to impart all round education to the students through the promotion of human values and principles. The emphasis is also on developing the students from the marginalized sections of the society. It is basically a Catholic educational institute and works towards social transformation. It offers Degree courses in Science, Arts and Commerce. In 1912, this famous Mumbai College opened its door to the female students. Then Fr. Sterp had been the Principal of this College. Dr. Frazer Mascarenhas is the present Principal of this college, whereas, the Vice-Principals are Dr. Nandita Mangalore, Dr. Fleur D'Souza, Errol Fernandes and Dr. Vivien Amonkar.People belonging to Catholic religious group are given special preference during admission. This college offers under-graduate as well as graduate courses in Arts, Science and Commerce. Added to this, Post-graduate and research programs are also done over here. Its research organizations include Caius Laboratory for Inter-Disciplinary Research, Social Science Centre and Nadkarny-Sacasa Research Laboratory. The college has recently been highly appreciated by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council for its excellent educational efforts.The college has a vast collection of approximately 120,000 volumes of books with some of them dating back to the 16th Century. Malhar is the name of St. Xavier's College's inter-collegiate festival. In this fest, a number of interesting quiz competitions and several other live performances take place. Usually, on August this festival is being arranged.

ADMISSION PROCEDURE

Application forms for admission to the First Year Junior College will be made available from the day the S.S.C. results of the Maharashtra State Board are announced and 3 subsequent days, as per the schedule announced. The expected date is in the first week of June

A duly filled in application form, available at the H.S.C. Board Office. Address: The Divisional Secretary, Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education, Mumbai Divisional Board, Plot No. 27 & 28, Sector 16-A, Vashi, New Mumbai – 00 703. Also a photograph affixed and attested for obtaining the provisional eligibility certificate.
The following certificates/documents of the last examination passed:
one attested copy of the Marksheet.
one attested copy of the Passing Certificate.
one attested copy of the School Leaving Certificate or Transfer certificate.

Students passing ICSE/CBSE/OTHER BOARDS are required to get their Original School Leaving Certificate countersigned by their respective Educational Inspector/Education Officer before securing admission to the First Year Junior College.

Additional Procedure to be followed by candidates coming from I.C.S.E., C.B.S.E., Other Boards/States and Foreign Boards, for admission to junior colleges (Std. XI & Std. XII) in Mumbai

A minimum essential percentage determined by the number of seats available and the marks actually obtained by the students who apply to the college.
Consideration to Catholics under the minority rights enshrined in the Constitution of India (and for whose education the College was founded).
Special consideration to the economically and socially disadvantaged and preference to students from scheduled castes and tribes.
The procedures and guidelines for admission laid down by the Government and accepted by the College (since 1997)
Fresh admissions to Std. XI and to the First Year B.A./B.Sc./B.Com./BMS/BMM are conducted soon after the S.S.C. and H.S.C. results respectively, of Mumbai Divisional Board are announced.
The College runs a small Hostel on campus for male students of the Senior College only, at which preference is given first to students of the Basic and Natural Sciences and to the other students on the basis of seniority, first to the Third Year students and then in descending order, to the Second and First Year students. The rooms are all meant for two occupants each. Admission is not guaranteed and the Hostel Superintendent will
accept applications only after admission to the College has been secured.

Students from outside Mumbai also find accommodation in other Hostels or as paying guests with some family. We have arrangements with a Hostel at Seva Niketan, Byculla, to accomodate about 30 male students of the Senior College.

Academic year is from June to April

ELIGIBILITY


For the undergraduate programs, the student are required to clear (10+2) HS or other equivalent examination. The student must submit the following documents to be eligible for admission:
H.S.C Certificate/Mark sheet
Caste Certificate (if applicable)
Documentary evidence regarding special category status, whereby special category include the following:
Wards of transferred State/Central Government and Private sector employees, wards of employees of Defense Dept./ex-service personnel, wards of Freedom Fighters, physically handicapped candidates and students who have met with accidents

Award winners at the District/State/National Level in Sports or cultural activities
