Janmashtami - The Birth Of Lord Krishna

Janmashtami marks the birth anniversary of Lord Krishna, the eighth incarnation of Lord Vishnu on earth. It is usually celebrated on the Ashtami of Krishna Paksh or the 8th day of the dark fortnight in the month of Bhadon according to the hindi calendar, which lies generally in the August/September months. Janmashtami is also known as Krishnastami or Gokulastami. This celebration is said to be revealed originally by the Sri Krishna himself to Yudhishthira, the eldest of Pandavas, as mentioned in the Bhavishyottara Puran.

Lord Krishna was born to Vasudev and Devki in Mathura, who were imprisoned by Devki's evil brother Kansa and was brought up by Nand and Yashoda in Gokul. It is believed that Lord Krishna was taken to Gokul in the midnight due to the fear of Kansa who was killing all the sons of Devki and Vasudev. So for this reason Gokul also holds an important place for the celebration of Janmashtami.
