INDIA FESTIVAL KARVA CHAUTH
Karwa Chauth festival is celebrated mostly by the married women (suhagins) in the Northern and Western states of India like Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Gujarat and some parts of Uttar Pradesh. Karva Chauth is observed on the fourth day of the dark fortnight of Ashwin, which is also called Kartik according to some calendars. Karwa Chauth Festival is the most significant Occasions that strengthens the sacred marital bond between husband and wife. It is observed by married women (suhagini) for ensuring wedded bliss and wishing long life for their husbands and children. A married woman who observes this fast is called ‘Saubhagyavati’ (joyous and happy state of wifehood). The fast of Karva Chauth is of particular importance to Hindu women as they believe it ensures the well-being, prosperity and longevity of their husbands. This Hindu festival has a cultural and social significance. The notion of female chastity, respectability, tolerance and demureness slowly but surely seeped into every layer of the Hindu society and literature, and great care was taken to glorify the woman, while the reigns of social control were firmly held by the mikado of morality – the male. In such a social construct, the woman’s identity hinged first on that of her father, and later and more on that of her husband.
A sari (in the baya) is a must for the first Karva Chauth of a girl. One thing to be taken care of is that the baya reaches the girl's in-laws home, where the girl has gone during the course of the day, before the evening. The baya is offered to the mother-in-law after the manasna. If the mother-in-law is not present, then the eldest lady in the house is presented with the baya. Sometimes, the elder one chooses to take only the perishable items, and leaves cash and clothes for the mother-in-law.
