Diagnosis of kidney stones

Wednesday, June 25th, 2014

Doctors can usually diagnose kidney stones by asking about symptoms and doing a physical examination. Further tests may be done to confirm the diagnosis, reveal the size, location and identity of the stone. These include:

# Blood tests: to identify excess amounts of certain chemicals related to the formation of stones.

# Urine analysis: patients are asked to give a urine sample for testing, and may be asked to collect urine over 24 hours to analyse it for the chemicals that cause stones.

# X-rays: stones that contain calcium show up white on the X-ray.

# Intravenous urogram (IVU): an X-ray involving an injection of special dye to show up stones that can’t be seen with X-rays alone.

# Ultrasound scan: this uses high frequency sound waves to produce an image of the internal organs.

Remedies for Wrinkles

Friday, June 6th, 2014

There are numerous over-the-counter treatment options for wrinkles, including various creams and lotions. Prescription treatments, including the retinoid cream renova, are also an option.

Removing skin layers to reduce wrinkles or irregular depressions is an effective way to regain smoother, more youthful looking skin. Dermabrasion (scraping layers away) and chemical peels (dissolving skin away) are two of the traditional methods used in skin resurfacing. Laser skin resurfacing with an ablative laser (such as an erbium or carbon dioxide laser) is another technique that, like dermabrasion and deeper chemical peels, may require some downtime during the healing process.

Other lasers, known as non-ablative lasers, may also be beneficial in treating wrinkles. These lasers work by heating the dermis and stimulating collagen growth. This process, which leaves the outer layers of skin intact, has no downtime associated with it. However, the results are not as dramatic as the ablative lasers which actually remove the surface layers of skin.
Botox collagen and other injections are the addional techniques available to help minimize wrinkles.

If you are considering treatment for your wrinkles, ask your doctor which procedure is right for you. There is no replacement for your doctor’s professional advice. Each person has his or her own individual needs; similarly, each procedure fulfills its own specific need.

How To Keep Your Breath Refreshing

Monday, June 2nd, 2014

Curing bad breath is important for your career, self-esteem and intimacy with others. Luckily most often bad breath is caused by habits that you can remedy or counter. For example you can stop smoking, chewing tobacco or drinking alcohol, which will help in curing bad breath by removing the cause.

Regularly brushing your teeth and tongue, especially after meals, as well as flossing daily, swishing with hydrogen peroxide and baking soda, and getting periodic teeth cleanings are, of course, the first places to start when addressing bad breath issues.

Curing bad breath with a salt rinse is a very old cure that has passed from generation to generation. The salt will kill bacteria in your mouth and help heal any gum disease. Just mix 1/2 tsp. of salt with half a cup of warm water, stir well and rinse your mouth with the solution before you go to sleep. Do this for a few days and you’ll see that your gums look more pink than red, and you have cured your bad breath.

Another common cause of halitosis is a deficiency in the mineral zinc, which helps maintain a clean, bacteria-free mouth. Some mouthwash products actually contain zinc as an active ingredient because the mineral is a known antimicrobial, and aids in the neutralization and elimination of harmful germs.

Refined sugar is especially bad for your teeth and will result in cavities, which in turn will result in bad breath. One of the best tips for curing bad breath is to avoid refined sugars in cookies, candy, and even in your coffee. Use brown sugar instead and in small amounts as sugar will also increase the dryness of your mouth, which is a cause of bad breath.
