Homoeopathy – Principle of Drug-proving

Principle of Drug-proving- As opposed to animal experimentation, homoeopathy stresses upon human experimentation and Albrecht von Haller (1708-1777) had already conveyed this idea prior to Hahnemann. The precise therapeutic properties of a drug are observed after it is administered to a good number of healthy individuals of both the sexes (experimentally), in minute doses & the symptoms are recorded. During drug proving gross pathological conditions are not allowed to develop, but all the signs and symptoms and states prior to them build up. These are then recorded and form the back-bone of Materia Medica. This is the reason why none of the homoeopathic medicines has ever been banned, as the effects of the medicines are pre-tested safely. One of the most demonstrable flaws of animal experimentation was Thalidomide: the drug was declared harmless (non-toxic) as the animals showed no side effects and even outrageously high doses did not kill rodents, rabbits, cats, or dogs. Thus approved to be prescribed in humans, thousands of families across the globe faced disastrous consequences. Also the fine symptoms that a homoeopathic physician looks for in a patient: mental and emotional symptoms, precise subjective sensations, modalities etc., will not be available in animal experimentation.      source
