Common Food Allergies

Thursday, January 29th, 2015

Eight foods are responsible for 90 percent of food allergies. They are:

  • cow’s milk
  • eggs
  • peanuts
  • fish
  • shellfish
  • tree nuts (such as cashews or walnuts)
  • wheat
  • soy

Milk Allergies

A milk allergy is a reaction to whey or casein, the proteins found in cow’s milk. It’s not the same as lactose intolerance. Milk allergies have been studied more than any other food allergy.

The bad news is that children with milk allergies are much more likely to develop allergic reactions to other foods including eggs, soy, and peanuts.

Most children with milk allergies also develop one or more other atopic diseases such as asthma, allergic rhinitis, or eczema.

Egg Allergies

Egg allergies occur most often in children and usually resolve at a very young age. However some people may remain allergic to eggs for their entire lives.

A person may be allergic to a certain protein in either the yolk or the egg whites. A person with an allergy to the egg yolk may be able to tolerate egg whites and vice versa.  Some people are allergic to both.

Peanut Allergies

Children with peanut allergies rarely grow out of their sensitivity to peanuts, so a peanut allergy is usually a lifelong disorder. Because of this, peanut allergies are particularly serious. Accidental exposure can occur at any time during a person’s life. Though rare, a peanut allergy may result in anaphylaxis. This is a severe allergic reaction that can restrict breathing or cause cardiac arrest. Anaphylaxis requires immediate medical attention in the form of a shot of epinephrine (EpiPen). A patient should be watched for several hours after the shot to make sure symptoms don’t return.

Know about Yellow Fever

Wednesday, January 28th, 2015

Causes

Yellow fever is caused by a virus that is spread by the Aedes aegypti mosquito. These mosquitoes thrive in and near human habitations where they breed in even the cleanest water. Most cases of yellow fever occur in sub-Saharan Africa and tropical South America.

Humans and monkeys are most commonly infected with the yellow fever virus. Mosquitoes transmit the virus back and forth between monkeys, humans or both.

When a mosquito bites a human or a monkey infected with yellow fever, the virus enters the mosquito’s bloodstream and circulates before settling in the salivary glands. When the infected mosquito bites another monkey or human, the virus then enters the host’s bloodstream, where it may cause illness.

Symptoms

During the first three to six days after you’ve contracted yellow fever — the incubation period — you won’t experience any signs or symptoms. After this, the infection enters an acute phase and then, in some cases, a toxic phase that can be life-threatening.

Acute phase

Once the infection enters the acute phase, you may experience signs and symptoms including:

  • Fever
  • Headache
  • Muscle aches, particularly in your back and knees
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Nausea, vomiting or both
  • Loss of appetite
  • Dizziness
  • Red eyes, face or tongue

These signs and symptoms usually improve and are gone within several days.

Toxic phase

Although signs and symptoms may disappear for a day or two following the acute phase, some people with acute yellow fever then enter a toxic phase. During the toxic phase, acute signs and symptoms return and more-severe and life-threatening ones also appear. These can include:

  • Yellowing of your skin and the whites of your eyes (jaundice)
  • Abdominal pain and vomiting, sometimes of blood
  • Decreased urination
  • Bleeding from your nose, mouth and eyes
  • Slow heart rate (bradycardia)
  • Liver and kidney failure
  • Brain dysfunction, including delirium, seizures and coma

The toxic phase of yellow fever can be fatal.

Risk factors

You may be at risk of the disease if you travel to an area where mosquitoes continue to carry the yellow fever virus. These areas include sub-Saharan Africa and tropical South America.

Even if there aren’t current reports of infected humans in these areas, it doesn’t mean you’re risk-free. It’s possible that local populations have been vaccinated and are protected from the disease, or that cases of yellow fever just haven’t been detected and officially reported.

If you’re planning on traveling to these areas, you can protect yourself by getting a yellow fever vaccine at least several weeks before traveling.

Anyone can be infected with the yellow fever virus, but older adults are at greater risk of getting seriously ill.

Complications

Yellow fever results in death for 20 to 50 percent of those who develop severe disease. Complications during the toxic phase of a yellow fever infection include kidney and liver failure, jaundice, delirium, and coma.

People who survive the infection recover gradually over a period of several weeks to months, usually without significant organ damage. During this time a person may experience fatigue and jaundice. Other complications include secondary bacterial infections, such as pneumonia or blood infections.

Pigmentation – The True Cure with Homeopathy

Tuesday, January 27th, 2015

Pigmentation also called as melasma or chloasma, facial pigmentation is characterized by brownish blotchy discoloration on the face that usually develops over a period of time. The pigmentation is due to the overproduction of the melanin (pigment that gives color to our skin) by the pigment cells called as melanocytes. Although melasma is a simple disorder and does not have any severe medical implication on the body but it can cause a severe cosmetic concern.

Pigmentation affects the forehead ,cheeks, upper lips and across the bridge of the nose and is characterized by dark skin-colored discoloration. This discolorations can occur in small patches called as macules (they look like freckles) or may occur in large dark brown colored patches. Occasionally it can extend to neck and upper arms. The incident of melasma is much more in women than men. Only one in twenty affected, is a male. Pigmentation usually starts between the ages of late twenties and forty. People with light brown skin complexion and who are living in conditions where the sun exposure is high, have a high susceptibility to develop it.

Pigmentation (Melasma) is usually of two types the epidermal or the dermal melasma. Epidermal melasma is a result of pigmentation in superficial layers of the skin- has a well defined border, is darker in color and responds very fast to homeopathic treatment. The dermal melasma which is a result of pigmentation in the deeper layers of the skin- has ill defined borders, is light in color and responds slow even to homeopathic treatments.

Pigmentation or Melasma occurs due to excess of pigments produced by melanocytes (pigment producing cells). This overproduction is stimulated by the female hormones when the skin is exposed to the sun. Genetic factors play a very strong role in the development of melasma.

Chronic or strong exposure to sun may precipitate discoloration and also worsen it. This is usually very difficult for the patient to realize, as the development of the melasma is a very slow process.

Homeopathy has a strong edge over the conventional methods used to treat melasma; the treatment of melasma with homeopathy is from inside of the body and is directed at removing the trigger factor which is stimulating the overproduction of pigment in the skin. Homeopathic medicine Sepia stands at the top of the table for treating melasma that is influenced by hormonal disturbances. Sepia acts very fast to treat the epidermal melasma caused by pregnancy. Homeopathic medicine Kali Carb also works wonders in treating post partum melasma. Thuja works for melasma that is induced by overexposure to sun. Dermal melasma’s are also treatable with homeopathy and but usually require a prolonged treatment before any sustainable and appreciable result is achieved.

Hemorrhoids or Piles- Homeopathy Cure

Friday, January 23rd, 2015

Most cases of hemorrhoids have good prognosis, especially if treated in time. One can diagnose hemorrhoids on clinical findings alone. However, if the hemorrhoids are associated with one or more symptoms like pain in abdomen, strangulation, excessive hemorrhage, etc, some other investigations like sigmoidoscopy, rectoscopy, or colonoscopy may be required to rule out other potential dangers.

Conservative hemorrhoid treatment comprises of stool softeners and laxatives.

Homeopathic Treatment of Hemorrhoids:

Homeopathic medicines can occasionally replace the surgeon’s knife. The homeopathic medicines work on the principle of “like cures like” and many different medicinal substances are used in varied potencies to help cure hemorrhoids (or any other disease for that matter). Homeopathy is a holistic medicine that is based on “Individualistic Approach” to any case.

As per this approach, any disease including hemorrhoids is treated individually after carefully considering the physical, mental, and emotional symptomatology of the person. Certain miasmatic dispositions are described in homeopathy and every individual has predominance of some miasm. They can also be called as pre-dispositions or susceptibilities of an individual suffering from certain disease traits. With aptly chosen constitutional homeopathic medicines, these traits can be modified positively to obtain cure from the existing problem and an overall health is achieved.

Also homeopathic medicines are extremely useful for acute symptoms of hemorrhoids. The pain, inflammation, itching, bleeding per rectum, etc can be effectively tackled with accurate simillimum chosen homeopathically.

Homeopathic Medicines for Piles or Hemorrhoids:

The homeopathic medicines like Aloe soc, Collinsonia, Hamamelis, Muriatic acid, Thuja, Aesculus, Ratanhia, Nux vomica, Kali carb, Ammonium carb, Kali carb, Phosphorus, etc work well in some case of hemorrhoids. However, one should refrain from self treatment on the basis of elementary knowledge of homeopathy. Expert homeopathic intervention is a must, as deriving the constitutional prescription is more of an art that needs to be mastered and without the constitutional approach, it is hard to find perfect cure from hemorrhoids.

Hemorrhoids or Piles

Thursday, January 22nd, 2015

The enlarged veins at the lower end of rectum and anus are termed as hemorrhoids or Piles. Enhanced pressure within the rectum and anus is the prime reason for protrusion of hemorrhoids and for rectal bleeding. The incidence of hemorrhoids is increasing thanks to our the increasing use of and  junk food and irregular eating habits. The initial signs of the hemorrhoids should be recognized so that the disease can be brought under control at an early stage with minimum treatment with homeopathy and hence avoid surgery.

Hemorrhoids is a growing problem faced mainly by the people of middle and old age. The two types ‘internal’ and ‘external’ hemorrhoids can be differentiated. The external variety is located under the skin that surrounds the anus. With the bowel movement, these hemorrhoids may swell, be felt, and cause pain and/or bleeding. The internal hemorrhoids however located in the inner lining of the rectum and cannot be felt. These are usually painless and can lead to bleeding per rectum with or without protrusion.

Causes of Hemorrhoids

The major factor that contributes to hemorrhoids is excessive straining at stool. However, certain causative factors and/or risk factors have been described as below:

1.  Heredity- Our genetic make up is one of the major factors for development and aggravation of hemorrhoids. There has been found familial weakness of blood vessel wall. Large supply of arterial blood to hemorrhoidal plexus is also found in certain families.

2.  Pregnancy- Post-partum and/or pregnancy hemorrhoids are found in many women owing to increased tension in rectal wall due to excessive straining during child birth and expansion of uterus during pregnancy.

3. Untreated conditions- Certain conditions like colitis, diarrheas, dysenteries, etc can be the pre-disposing factors for hemorrhoids if left untreated for long.

4. Chronic constipation- Chronic constipation has myriad of causes ranging from unhealthy eating habits to sedentary work-style. But it is by far the commonest cause of hemorrhoids.

5. Sedentary habits- People working in sitting postures for long time have higher risk of developing hemorrhoids. Lack of physical activity or exercise is one of the chief pre-disposing factors.

6. Some serious illnesses- Systemic or portal hypertension, inferior vena-caval congestion, rectal cancer, cardiac or pulmonary diseases can also may lead to hemorrhoids.

Symptoms Signs and Complications of Hemorrhoids

1. If the internal hemorrhoid is prolapsed, one can feel it as a lump outside the anus. Sometimes this lump can also be gently pushed inside the anus. But if not, it can lead to enlargement and swelling of the hemorrhoid. Entrapment of hemorrhoid may require immediate intervention.

2. There can be itching at the anus (pruritus ani) and tingling sensation.

3. Increased desire to have repeated bowel movement is also observed in some patients.

4. Thrombosed external hemorrhoid may lead to severe pain that gets aggravated with every bowel movement and prolonged sitting.

5. Bleeding per rectum is one of the commonest symptoms detected first by the patient.

6. Mucus discharge may accompany prolapsed hemorrhoids.

7. Complications like strangulation of piles, profuse hemorrhage, thrombosis, ulceration, and rarely gangrene may occur if hemorrhoids are left untreated for long.

Prevention of Hemorrhoids

he modifiable factors or risk factors of hemorrhoid can be prevented by following these things:

1. Increase the water intake. One must drink at least 10 glasses of water per day that helps keep our stools soft and improve bowel activity

2. Increase dietary fiber and it will add roughage to your food. It certainly enhances regular bowel movements

3. Avoid junk food devoid of fiber that just adds empty calories. This kind of food also adds extra pounds leading to obesity, which is another pre-disposing factors for hemorrhoids

4. Boost up your physical activity level. Especially the people with sedentary working habits have to get moving, as lack of physical movement is one of the chief factors contributing to increased incidence of hemorrhoids these days. Exercise also helps to get rid of hemorrhoids faster by reducing the tendency to constipation and pressure on hemorrhoidal veins. So keep active to prevent piles.

5. Also one should not suppress the urge for stools for long time. This step helps a great deal in hemorrhoid prevention.

How to Heal a Cold Sore Naturally

Wednesday, January 21st, 2015

A cold sore, also commonly called a fever blister, is caused by the herpes simplex virus and is spread from one person to another through infected bodily fluids. After an initial cold sore outbreak the herpes virus stays dormant in the body, but sores can emerge again at any time. Left alone, a cold sore will usually heal on its own within a few days. To help it heal faster, there are many natural remedies you can try at home.

1 : Healing a cold sore through diet -

Increase the amount of high-lysine foods in your diet during the cold sore outbreak. Lysine is a protein that helps the body heal and prevents cold sores. Choose lean meats and dairy products such as yogurt, eggs, milk and cheese. These foods are all high in lysine.

Avoid foods that are high in arginine. Arginine is also a protein, but one that serves as a building block for the herpes virus, helping it to spread. The highest concentrations of arginine are found in whole grains, seeds, nuts and chocolate.

Stay away from acidic foods. This is particularly important if they will come in contact with the cold sore should you eat them. The herpes virus thrives in an acidic environment, so it is important to keep all acid away from the sores. Acidic foods to avoid include citrus fruits, tomatoes and anything with vinegar.

Eat to boost your immune system and help your body to fight off the virus.Include plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables in your diet daily. Some of the best choices for boosting the immune system are cauliflower, cabbage, brussels sprouts, broccoli, onion and garlic.

Supplement your diet by taking a good multivitamin and vitamin C supplement daily.

2 : Treating with ice -

Ice the cold sore as soon as you feel it forming. Repeat the application regularly. The herpes virus requires a moist, warm environment to grow. Cool the sore and keep it from warming back up to prevent it from growing bigger and to speed up healing.

3 : Treating with lemon -

Apply lemon balm or lemon extract directly to the sore. Soak a cotton ball in the lemon and dab it on the cold sore 2 to 3 times a day.

Make a salt, milk and lemon juice treatment. Add a little lemon juice and milk to salt. Roll into a ball. Dab on the cold sore once a day. After application, dab a little aloe vera on the cold sore.

4 : Treating with salt -

Put salt on a cold sore. Moisten your finger and then dip it in regular table salt. Put your salty finger on the cold sore and press gently for 30 seconds to allow the salt time to enter the sore.

5 : Treating with herbs-

Use a topical oil, such as lavender oil or melissa oil. Both are known to speed the healing of cold sores. Apply the oil to the sore several times a day.

6: Treating with tea-

Apply a teabag to a cold sore. Soak a tea bag in hot water, allow it to cool, and then apply the wet bag to the sore for 5 to 10 minutes. Use a fresh tea bag and repeat the process every 1 to 2 hours.

Homepathy cure for Vertigo

Tuesday, January 20th, 2015

Vertigo

Vertigo usually occurs as a result of a disorder in the vestibular system (i.e., structures of the inner ear, the vestibular nerve, brainstem, and cerebellum). The vestibular system is responsible for integrating sensory stimuli and movement and for keeping objects in visual focus as the body moves.

A number of specific conditions can cause vertigo. In the elderly however the condition is often multifactorial.

Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is brief periods of vertigo ( less than one minute ) which occur with change in position. It is the most common cause of vertigo. It occurs in 0.6% of the population yearly with 10% having an attack during their lifetime. It is believed to be due to a mechanical malfunction of the inner ear. BPPV can be effectively treated with repositioning movements.
