Potential Causes of Back Pain in Children and Teens

Friday, February 13th, 2015

While adults can have vertebral disc injuries involving rupture, protrusion or slipping, and compression, these problems are uncommon in children. However, as kids age and their bodies mature, it becomes more likely that an injury to the spinal discs may occur and cause back pain.

Causes of Back Pain that Tend to Occur Among Older Children:

  • Spondylolysis. As kids’ sporting events become more competitive and the activities more specialized, certain types of injuries causing back pain tend to arise.  Spondylosis, a defect of the joint between vertebral bones, is commonly found in those who tend to hyperextend their backs (bend backwards), such as gymnasts. This injury may actually represent a stress fracture and the period of rest and recuperation may be extensive – up to 4 to 6 weeks.
  • Spondylolisthesis. Occasionally, further injury can be found as spondylolisthesis, a “slipping” of one vertebra upon another. This condition can progress through adolescence, and if it results in instability and back pain it may require spinal fusion surgery at a later point.
  • Disc Injuries and vertebral fractures. Teens who tend to punish their spines through gymnastics or extreme sports (such as skateboarding, in-line skating, and vert biking) will frequently land very hard on their feet or buttocks. Either way, the force is transmitted to their vertebrae, which can result in a vertebral fracture  and/or damage to the intervertebral discs. If the disc material is extruded out or herniated, the spinal cord nerve roots leaving the cord can be compressed. This causes the sensation of pain along the path of that nerve. A well-known version of this is sciatica which presents as buttock pain radiating down the back of a leg. Nonsurgical measures are usually the first line of treatment for this type of pain (such as physical therapy, medications, osteopathic or
chiropractic adjustment If these treatments do not provide sufficient pain relief, patients may require surgery (e.g. a microdiscectomy or discectomy) to relieve pressure on the nerve.

Homeopathic Remedies For Weak Bone

Monday, January 5th, 2015

Many factors can contribute to osteoporosis, including the aging process (especially in women after menopause), inadequate exercise, dietary errors or deficiencies, and effects of certain drugs. Homeopathic remedies will not reverse existing bone loss, but can bring the body into better balance and help its minerals and nutrients be used efficiently. Remedies are also helpful for aching bones and prevention or healing of fractures.

Calcarea carbonica: This remedy is often helpful to individuals who are easily tired by exertion and tend to feel anxious and overwhelmed from work or stress. The person may be chilly, flabby or overweight, and feel worse from cold and dampness. Back pain, swollen joints, and a sweaty head at night are often seen. People who need this remedy often have strong cravings for both eggs and sweets.

Calcarea phosphorica: Stiffness, soreness, and weakness of the bones and joints often are experienced by those who need this remedy. Aching in the bones of the neck, upper back, and hips can be distressing. Deep tiredness frequently is felt, especially after exercise. Calcium deposits and bone-spurs may develop, even while general bone-loss is taking place, and fractures may be slow to heal. A feeling of dissatisfaction and a strong desire for travel or a change of circumstances are often seen in people who need Calcarea phosphorica.

Phosphorus: This remedy is often helpful to people who are sensitive, suggestible, imaginative, but easily tired or weakened physically. Bones may be less strong than normal, or be slow to heal after fractures. Weakness is often felt in the spine, with burning pain between the shoulder blades. People who need this remedy are often tall and thin with an easily-flushing face. A desire for refreshing foods (especially ice cream) and strong thirst for cold or carbonated drinks are other indications for Phosphorus.

Silicea (also called Silica): People who need this remedy are often nervous, easily tired, very chilly, and tend to sweat at night. They have a refined or delicate appearance, and often have weakness in the spine. Their injuries are slow to heal, and they tend to have a low resistance to infection. Moderate exercise often warms the person up and improves energy.

Symphytum: When osteoporosis is a problem, fractures often occur from mild trauma. This remedy can be useful for strengthening and healing bones when new fractures occur, and also helpful when pain persists in old, healed fractures.

Homeopathy Dosage Directions

Instructions for use are usually printed on the label.

Many homeopathic physicians suggest that remedies be used as follows: Take one dose and wait for a response. If improvement is seen, continue to wait and let the remedy work. If improvement lags significantly or has clearly stopped, another dose may be taken. The frequency of dosage varies with the condition and the individual. Sometimes a dose may be required several times an hour; other times a dose may be indicated several times a day; and in some situations, one dose per day (or less) can be sufficient.
If no response is seen within a reasonable amount of time, select a different remedy.

Acute cases of diarrhea, nausea and vomiting due to a viral or bacterial infection can be effectively treated at home using single homeopathic remedies. Diarrhea, nausea and vomiting caused by overindulgence in food or drink can also be treated homeopathically. They are completely natural, easy to administer, and have no side effects. All the remedies mentioned below should be used in a 30C potency (strength). Look for “30C” written at the end of the given remedy name (e.g. Arsenicum Album 30C).

Arsenicum Album: The first remedy to try in cases of food poisoning or traveler’s diarrhea. There is vomiting and diarrhea. People needing this remedy are weak, chilly, anxious and thirsty.
Nux Vomica: A great remedy for nausea and vomiting, especially after alcoholic drinks or overindulging in food. It’s known as “the hangover remedy.”

Colocynthis: A good remedy for diarrhea anytime there is abdominal pain that is better from pressure and bending double.

Ipecacuanha: Good for persistent nausea, with or without diarrhea, which is not relieved by vomiting.

Podophyllum: Another common diarrhea remedy. The stool is profuse and offensive smelling. The stools may be yellowish or green and are often completely liquid, and the bowel movements can come very frequently.

Bryonia: Diarrhea and/or vomiting that is worse from the slightest motion. This person is irritable, wants to be left alone and feels warm.

Since homeopathy is safe and non-toxic, the remedies can be given to pregnant women and children. Dosage is the same for adults and children: a few pellets dissolved in the mouth, taken preferably 15 minutes away from food or water. The remedy can be repeated every half hour for the first few doses, then a few times per day thereafter. Remedy response is very fast in cases of acute diarrhea and vomiting, so if there is no response after waiting a few hours, it means that you have chosen the wrong remedy.

Difference between Allopathy, Homeopathy and Ayurveda

Tuesday, December 9th, 2014
There are basically three types of methodology to treat a disease. Homeopathy, Allopathy and Ayurveda. All of these methodologies have a common goal which is to cure the disease. Each one has different origin and different way of treatment. In the present article we are going to differentiate these three methodologies their origin and the way of treatment used by them.
Homeopathy:
The word homeopathy is basically derived from the Greek word “homoios” which means like and “pathos” which means suffering. Which means like cures like or we can say that the substance which is responsible for a particular disease in healthy people is used to cure that disease. Homeopathy medicines are highly dependent on individuality. Two persons having same disease are treated differently means the medicine is different for both in homeopathy. The medicine is given on the basis of how different peoples react to same kind of disease. So, everyone has a different reaction to same disease and hence is treated with different medicines.
Homeopathy helps the body to heal itself by improvising its immune system. The medicine given to an individual depends on his behavior and his susceptibility to a particular type of disease. The treatment in homeopathy takes a long period of time. So it can’t be used in emergency case. One good thing about homeopathy is that this methodology has no side effects if the treatment is going under the supervision.
Allopathy:
Allopathy is basically a part of western medical system and is spread all over the world. Its network is very wide. It is adopted by almost all of the countries around the world. Allopathy is drug oriented methodology. Allopathy mainly depends on three things hypothesis, experimentation and the outcome of the experiment. This methodology basically depends on experimentation. In this doctors treat a disease based on symptoms not on the causes. The pill given to the patient depends on the outcome of the experiment. Suppose one got viral then his blood is tested to check the type of viral. Depending on the output of the blood test the pill is given. So we can say that in allopathy there is a pill for a particular disease. There is no place for individuality in allopathy because the same pill is given to all the patients having same kind of disease.
The effectiveness of allopathy in emergency is the main reason why people around the world adopted allopathy. Most of the drugs given in allopathy have side effects. The pill given for a disease is curing that particular disease and also giving birth to another disease in the body. So allopathy has this drawback of side effects of pills. For example the person who has fever is given paracetamol tablet which is responsible to bring down the body temperature to normal condition but on the other hand it is harmful for our lever. The side effects can be internal or external. Once your disease is cured then you have to take pill for the side effects caused due the pills used consumed for the treatment. And then while curing these side effects another one occurs. So a chain of side effects is created due to the pills given in allopathic treatment. So this is the area of concern in allopathic treatment.
Ayurveda:
Ayurveda is ancient medical science of india. It is called as the mother of eastern medical science. According to ayurveda there are three types of elemental energies in human body and a disease is caused due to imbalance of any of these three energies called doshas. The three doshas are
1).           Vata (air or wind)
2).           Pitta (fire or bile)
3).           Kapha (earth or bodily fluids or phlegm or mucous)
All the above faults or doshas are called tridoshas in ayurveda. The imbalance of any of these doshas in our body causes the disease. There are list of disease in ayurveda caused due to imbalance of one particular dosha.  Ayurveda depends on the hierarchical structure rather than experimentation in allopathy. The physician in ayurveda does their own experimentation to identify the disease. Every physician in ayurveda has different remedy for a same kind of disease. Ayurveda depends on the medicinal plants for treating a disease. It uses the matter in their natural form. When compared with allopathy, ayurveda has very low count in terms of side effects which merely occurs due to the lack of knowledge of the physician. Now a day’s people are adopting ayurveda due to its low count of side effects.

Save Your Hair Using Homeopathy

Tuesday, December 2nd, 2014

Homeopathic remedies are prescribed by symptoms rather than conditions, as each case of a particular illness can manifest differently in different people. However, to make it quicker to find the symptoms related to Hair Loss, the symptoms experienced by a previous vistor to our homeopathic remedy finder have been grouped, by them, under the name of Hair Loss.

The novel approach of suppressing the autoimmune response with local cortisone (steroid) may work temporarily and is limited to the patch only. Relapses are common and the course still remains unpredictable. It has no long-term advantages and does not alter the nature of the disease.

Typically considered the curse of middle-aged men, hair loss affects approximately two thirds of all women at some point in their lives to varying degrees. For women, hair loss can be devastating.

Alopecia Areata is an autoimmune skin disease resulting in the loss of hair from the scalp and elsewhere on the body. The person’s own immune system attacks the hair follicles, resulting in round, smooth bald patches on the scalp. This condition can progress to complete scalp hair loss (alopecia totalis) and/or complete body hair loss (alopecia universalis).

Is high cholesterol a problem for your health?

Monday, November 10th, 2014

Cholesterol is fat, or lipid. It is also a sterol, from which steroid hormones are made. If you held cholesterol in your hand, you would see a waxy substance that resembles the very fine scrapings of a whitish-yellow candle. Cholesterol flows through your body via your bloodstream, but this is not a simple process.
High-density lipoprotein cholesterol, the pickup-truck fleet, is known as the“good” cholesterol. This is the compact, or high-density, form of cholesterol.
Low-density lipoprotein cholesterol is known as the “bad” cholesterol; however, LDL cholesterol is bad for your body only if you have too much in your bloodstream or your have too much of the particularly harmful type.
Is cholesterol really harmful for your heart ?
Too much cholesterol in the blood can lead to blockage of the arteries. Fatlike deposits may build up inside arteries that provide blood to the legs, blood to the brain, or blood to the heart.
When blood flow through a coronary artery (blood to the heart is completely blocked, an area of the heart muscle does not receive the blood and therefore the oxygen blood carries that the heart needs to survive. When this happens, a heart attack occurs.
How you can minimize your cholesterol level and live your live healthy and disease free ?
If you increase your physical activity each day or exercise regularly, it will stimulate the liver’s production of High density lipoprotein is Losing excess weight can also improve your High density lipoprotein profile. Where regular physical activity can increase your High density lipoprotein cholesterol, reduce cholesterol, and reduce triglycerides. Since triglycerides are a blood fat, they are available to the body as a source of fuel for muscular activity. Therefore, people who are active can use up the triglycerides in their bloodstream s a source of energy.

Hypotension, Low Blood Pressure

Treatment of Low Blood Pressure, Hypotension

Conventional Treatment

Low blood pressure in healthy subjects without symptoms or organ damage needs no treatment. All patients with symptoms possibly due to low blood pressure should be evaluated by a doctor. The doctor needs to identify the cause of the low blood pressure since treatment will depend on the cause.

• Dehydration is treated with fluids and minerals (electrolytes). Mild dehydration without nausea and vomiting can be treated with oral fluids and electrolytes. Moderate to severe dehydration usually is treated with intravenous fluids and electrolytes.

• Blood loss can be treated with intravenous fluids and blood transfusions. If bleeding is continuing, it needs to be treated as well.

• Septicemia is treated with intravenous fluids and antibiotics or other medicines.

• Blood pressure medications or diuretics are adjusted, changed, or stopped by the doctor if they are causing low blood pressure symptoms.

• Bradycardia may be due to a medication. The doctor may reduce, change or stop the medication. Bradycardia due to sick sinus syndrome or heart block is treated with an implantable pacemaker.

• Tachycardia is treated depending on the nature of the tachycardia. Atrial fibrillation can be treated with oral medications, electrical cardioversion, or a catheterization procedure called pulmonary vein isolation. Ventricular tachycardia can be controlled with medications or with an implantable defibrillator.

• Pulmonary embolism and deep vein thrombosis is treated with blood thinners, intravenous heparin initially and oral warfarin later.

• Pericardial fluid can be removed by a procedure called pericardiocentesis.

• Postural hypotension can be treated by increasing water and salt intake, using compression stockings to compress the leg veins and reduce the pooling of blood in the veins. Increasing salt intake can lead to heart failure in patients with existing heart disease and should not be undertaken without consulting a doctor.
