The term incest refers to sexual contact between close blood relatives for whom such behavior is forbidden by law, custom or religion. Taboos against incest have been found in virtually all human societies, although some exceptions have been documented, including the Incan society and the societies of ancient Iran and Ancient Egypt.

There are many sources of information and support for victims of incest. The Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network (RAINN) is a non-profit organization based in Washington, D.C. RAINN operates a national toll-free hotline for victims of sexual assault. They may be reached at 1-800-656-HOPE or on-line at RAINNmail@aol.com. Another resource is Victims Of Incest Can Emerge Survivors (VOICES) in Action, Inc., an international organization to provide assistance to victims of incest and child abuse in becoming survivors and to generate public awareness of the prevalence of incest.
